After months of waiting, baseball returns to replace my usual nightly programming with Michael Kay's enormous head. Always one of my favorite days of the year, this Opening Day will be a particularly bittersweet one in the Bronx. The Yankees are beginning their final season in The House That Ruth Built. I've spent more time in Yankee Stadium than I can calculate and many of my best memories took place there. Watching Tino Martinez and Derek Jeter rally the Yankees to victory in game 4 of the 2001 World Series (The first major league baseball game ever played in November) was one of the highlights of my short, freckled life.
On a side note, I'd like to personally thank the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants for making this year's baseball off-season the most enjoyable one I can remember. Customarily my Yankee countdown clock starts the moment the Giants stumble in the Wild Card round, but my beloved football season was extended several weeks by the greatest playoff run I have ever seen.
Let's hope the Yankees can celebrate one last World Series title in the real Yankee Stadium. The excitement starts at 1:05pm (with a possible rain delay) and ends at 3:47 when Kyle Farnsworth gives up a 3-run homer to Frank Thomas and the Yankees lose 6-4.
